Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell killed in the Los Angeles Archdiocese on Saturday with a gunshot wound to a child in need
The Los Angeles Archdiocese auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell was found dead with a gunshot wound at his home on Saturday. A man who went to look at him found his body, according to LAist.
He had a passion for building a community where the dignity and sanctity of every human life was honored and protected and he was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and immigrant.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department previously said investigators responded to a shooting death at 12:57 p.m. on Saturday in the LA suburb of Hacienda Heights, where an adult male was pronounced dead.
O’Connell was born in County Cork, Ireland, and ordained in the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 1979, the diocesan news site Angelus News reported. O’Connell was named an auxiliary bishop by Pope Francis.
Working with immigrants was also a top priority for O’Connell and he served as chairman of the interdiocesan Southern California immigration Task Force, which helped coordinate the local church’s response to the recent influx of migrants from Central America, Angelus said.
“It’s been the great joy of my life to be the pastor of these people, especially the ones who are suffering or in need or facing difficulty,” O’Connell told Angelus News in 2015.
Some people lit candles in memory of the religious leader at the scene of O’Connell’s death on Saturday.
Linda said that O’Connell was there for every child and family she had represented. Always. Being the face of Jesus for me and many other people is where helping, supporting and generally being a part of comes from.
Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, the archbishop of Los Angeles, was devastated by the shooting death of O’Connell
A man was taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of a Catholic bishop renowned for his work as a community “peacemaker,” the LA County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday.
The archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez said in a statement that he was sad about O’Connell’s death.
Gomez said that Bishop Dave was a man of deep prayer who had a great love for the Blessed Mother. He was a peacemaker and had a passion for building a community where the dignity of every humanlife was honored and protected.
He said the task force was a labor of love because it was about what schools and parishes were all about. Not just for unaccompanied minors but for all our children. Even the kids who have too much are hurting. They feel we’ve abandoned them. And the migrant youths have become a metaphor for our whole society.”
“I’m brokenhearted. He was not here to share his inspiration and his prayers with us and I have been crying for the last few days.
The Shootout at the LHC: Carlos Medina, the Emigrant from O’Connell and an Integral Sheriff’s Attorney
The Sheriff stated at the news conference that the suspect was Carlos Medina, O’Connell’s husband. Medina had also done some work around O’Connell’s home.
“I’ve been part of the people’s lives, and been there during the suffering of the young people who have lost their lives so many times, but I haven’t had any problems,” O’Connell told Angelus News in 2015. I think it’s more important for people to be in the neighborhoods to be with people.
State Sen Bob Archuleta said at the news conference that O’Connell had the ability to bring together people from all walks of life, from gang members to clergy members.
