The incident of Imam Sayed Elnakib: a man in a mosque is safe, but a member of the congregation is not afraid to pray
The leader of a mosque was stabbed in the head while he led his congregation in prayer. The assailant was quickly subdued by worshippers, according to local authorities.
The suspect, who was unknown to congregants prior to Sunday’s incident, lunged forward with a knife and stabbed the worshipper at least twice.
When the suspect tried to escape from the mosque, congregants held him until police arrived, he said.
The mosque had more than 200 congregants at the time of the stabbing. The spokesperson said he strongly believes that this was an isolated incident and assured all congregants “that the mosque is safe and to practice their faith, it is open.”
“I am relieved to hear that Imam Sayed Elnakib is in stable condition, and wish him a full and speedy recovery,” the councilman added. He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. As a community, it is important that we come together to support one another and denounce all forms of hate and violence.”
Sayegh said at the press conference on Sunday that there will be increased police patrols at mosques throughout the city in order to ensure people’s safety in the last few days of the holy month. Sayegh said you should not be afraid to pray.
“We appreciate the efforts of those here who were able to apprehend the assailant and we also want to reassure the family, the congregation at the mosque, that there will be extra police attention,” the mayor said.
“This is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar year and we want to make sure that the safety of those that are just coming to pray is a priority for us and that we take this situation very seriously,” he continued. We want to let anyone who is coming to worship know they don’t have to worry about being attacked.
